The school is EDURISK’s partner of choice. An active partner, not merely the follower of a “Seismology 101” course or the passive recipient of new theories in science didactics. Opting for the EDURISK experience means to be offered a choice of several learning paths to take. Each of these paths will lead teachers and their students into exploring a different set of notions and abilities, but the end in view is one and the same for all: getting acquainted with a danger and learning how to keep it at bay.
To protect oneself against a danger, one needs first of all to know it. Without knowledge, no effective preventive action can be taken, neither by individuals nor by society.
When the danger to ward off is a natural one, it is necessary to know the natural, cultural and historical context within which this danger does occur. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and floods are natural, physical events but Mankind, with its actions and choices, can become partly responsible for the way these natural events will affect a country. In the same way, the occurrence of these natural events will also affect and change mankind’s ways of thinking and acting, subverting not only the buildings but the minds and souls as well.
EDURISK develops educational tools and learning courses specifically designed to foster, nurture and enhance knowledge. both for its own sake and for the sake of its many practical uses. Only with knowledge can anyone learn how to be (aware of the existence of a danger) and how to behave (in the ways most likely to help minimizing the danger or avoiding it altogether).
